California community colleges are implementing direct assessment competency-based
education. This is a flexible, student-centered learning model where students progress
by demonstrating mastery of clearly defined skills and knowledge, rather than advancing
according to a set term or class schedule. This approach expands access, accelerates
completion, and strengthens workforce readiness.
